Australian Essential Eight Compliance

The Australian Essential Eight is a set of baseline cybersecurity strategies developed by the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) to help organisations protect themselves against common and high-impact cyber threats. It is widely recognised as one of the most practical and effective frameworks for improving cyber resilience across government, business, and critical industries.

Designed to reduce the likelihood and impact of cyber incidents, the Essential Eight provides a structured, measurable approach that strengthens an organisation’s security posture from both a technical and operational perspective.

The Eight Strategies

The Essential Eight consists of the following key mitigation strategies:

1. Application Control

Ensures only approved and trusted software can be executed, limiting malware and unauthorised applications.

2. Patch Applications

Regularly updates software to fix vulnerabilities that attackers commonly exploit.

3. Configure Microsoft Office Macros

Restricts or controls macros to prevent malicious macro-based attacks.

4. User Application Hardening

Disables unnecessary features in applications (e.g., Flash, ads, Java) to reduce exploitation opportunities.

5. Restrict Administrative Privileges

Limits high-level access to only those who need it, reducing the potential impact of compromised accounts.

6. Patch Operating Systems

Keeps operating systems updated and secure, preventing attackers from leveraging known weaknesses.

7. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Adds an extra layer of security, ensuring access requires more than just a password.

8. Regular Backups

Protects critical data by ensuring secure, recoverable backups are always available.

Why the Essential Eight Matters

Implementing the Essential Eight helps organisations:

  • Reduce the risk of ransomware and data breaches

  • Strengthen defences against common cyberattacks

  • Improve compliance with government and industry expectations

  • Establish a baseline of cyber hygiene across systems and users

  • Support long-term maturity through a staged implementation model (Maturity Levels 0–3)
